What HMG is
HMG (human menopausal gonadotropin, or menotropins) is a purified preparation of the pituitary hormones FSH and LH, originally derived from the urine of postmenopausal women. It is an FDA-approved prescription drug used in fertility treatment to stimulate egg and sperm production under specialist supervision.

How HMG works
It supplies follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) directly. In women, FSH drives the growth of ovarian follicles; in men with certain deficiencies, the combination stimulates testosterone and sperm production. Dosing requires careful monitoring because overstimulation carries real risks.

A worked example
A 75 mg vial reconstituted with 1 mL of bacteriostatic water gives 75 mg/mL. A 150 mcg dose is then 0.002 mL — about 0.2 units on a 100-unit insulin syringe, giving roughly 500 doses per vial before accounting for residual volume left in the vial and syringe.
