Are peptides steroids?

No. Peptides and steroids are different classes of molecule that work in different ways, are regulated differently, and carry different risks. The confusion is understandable — they circulate in the same communities — but conflating them leads people to wrong conclusions in both directions.

The structural difference

Steroids are lipids built on a characteristic four-ring carbon structure, derived from cholesterol. Testosterone, cortisol, and estrogen are all steroids. Because they are fat-soluble, they pass through the cell membrane and act on receptors inside the cell, changing gene expression directly.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the same building blocks as proteins, just shorter. Insulin is a peptide. So is semaglutide. They are generally water-soluble, cannot cross the cell membrane freely, and instead bind receptors on the cell surface to trigger a signaling cascade. This is also why most are injected: swallowed, they would be digested like any other protein.

The mechanism difference

An anabolic steroid supplies a hormone the body then has in excess. A growth hormone secretagogue like ipamorelin asks the pituitary to release more of what it already makes. That distinction matters clinically: supplying a hormone suppresses natural production, while stimulating release tends to work within the body's existing feedback loops — imperfectly, but meaningfully.

The legal difference

Anabolic steroids are Schedule III controlled substances; possession without a prescription is a crime. Most peptides are not scheduled, which people frequently misread as approval. It usually means only that no one has legislated them. Peptide legality is its own tangle of FDA status, compounding restrictions, and marketing rules.

Why "peptides are safer" is the wrong takeaway

It is true that peptides do not carry the specific risks steroids are known for — androgenic effects, hepatic strain from orals, lipid changes, testicular atrophy. But "does not have steroid side effects" is not the same as "safe." Several widely used peptides have no human trial data at all, and FDA placed a group of them in Category 2 specifically over safety concerns. A steroid's risks are at least documented. Many peptides' risks are simply unknown.
